Wet wipes can provide a more hygienic alternative than conventional materials. By adopting BASF's solutions in production, Korea Nonwoven Technology (KNT) was able to develop a new type of meltblown nonwoven fabric grade with better barrier properties and mechanical properties than conventional meltblown grades. This new meltblown grade was originally introduced for filter applications, and KNT is now developing it to further promote business growth. One such area is disposable wipes. As consumers attach great importance to health and hygiene, disposable wipes for indoor and outdoor use are becoming more and more popular. Irgatec's possible monofilament is thinner, stronger and more flexible than the monofilament of the prior art. Compared with existing materials (such as paper, spunbonded nonwovens and conventional meltblown grades), the resulting stronger fabric improves cleaning efficiency. 'Our additives enable customers to economically produce high-end nonwovens with unique properties,' said Hermann Althoff, vice president of High Performance Chemicals Asia Pacific. 'The main advantages of nonwovens made by Irgatec include enhanced barrier properties, improved mechanical properties of meltblown fabrics, and cost savings due to the flexibility of raw materials.' KNT CEO Mr. Kwang-il Kwon said: ' With BASF's rheology modifying additives, we are able to launch a new meltblown grade high-quality disposable wipes with better strength, elasticity and thickness.' 'This makes us the Korean market.' Melt blowing is a one-step process in which a stream of molten polymer is subjected to heated high velocity air to produce a microfiber web. The ability to form webs directly from molten polymers without controlling stretching makes meltblown technology a clear cost advantage over other systems. These fine fibers provide a very high surface area and are suitable (or beneficial) for many applications. Irgatec allows controlled rheological modification of PP for nonwoven applications. It is very efficient at extrusion temperatures exceeding 250°C, so it is particularly suitable for PP meltblown applications. This fabric does not irritate the skin, so it is suitable for many sanitary products such as diapers, cleaning wipes, filtration products and medical applications.
